A Closer Look - CONSCIENCE (Post 2 of 7) 6/30/2008

Post by Mike_White »

1.) Innocence
2.) Conscience
3.) Human Government
4a.) Promise (Before the Nation of Israel was formed)
4b.) Law ( After the Nation of Israel was formed)
5.) Grace
6.) Tribulation
7a.) Millennial Reign
7b.) Eternal State (Reign of Christ continues into eternity with New heaven and New Earth)

Next lets talk about the age of Conscience.

2.) Conscience
- Opening Event - Genesis 4:2-17 - Genesis 4:7 "If you do what is right will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right sin is crouching at your door: it desires to have you , but you must master it." With these words God warned Cain about his Conscience after offering a sacrifice in disobedience to God and having it not be accepted by God. Cain knew what sacrifice to offer having the example set for him in his parents and their dealings with sin Genesis 3:21 and Gods requirements and the animal sacrifice that resulted. It is likely Cain would have had to humble himself and ask for a sheep from his brother.

- Duration - Unknown (We don’t know how old Cain or Able was when this happened or when the Flood came on the earth however if we look at the genealogies it was probably totally less than 1400 years.)

- Man’s Failure - Genesis 4:16, Genesis 6:12 - Conscience Ineffective- Cain murders his brother and his conscience does not prevent his sin. "So Cain went out from the Lord's presence and lived in the land of Nod east of Eden.",Also God saw that despite the Conscience within man the earth became corrupt. "God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways."

- Trend of the Dispensation - Genesis 6:5-13 - Away from God - Man despite Gods many warnings turns away from God. (Methuselah being a picture of Gods longsuffering died the same day the flood came. And for 969 years the people of the earth were warned by Noah a preacher of righteousness to turn to God away from Sin yet the conscience was not enough to turn them.

- Mans Individual Responsibility - Genesis 4:4,7, Hebrews 11:4,5 - Believe and obey. Abel believed God regarding the promise that had been made to Adam and Eve and showed that faith by offering the sacrifice that God required and commanded. Cain had to bear the penalty of his sin through ha mark he had put on him and an individual curse driving him away from the land.

- Closing Event - Genesis7:17-24 - The Flood destroys all mankind except Noah who was saved with his family through the Ark. Even Noah’s Conscience did not help him. In The final scene of Noah we find Noah is drunk in his tent with one of his sons making fun of his nakedness resulting in a curse. The Ark however represents Jesus and all who enter into Christ are saved from the judgment despite the inadequacy of their conscience. Later in scripture we find that the conscience can be seared 1 Timmothy 4:2 or even evil Hebrews 10:22 (KJV). So Conscience is not good enough to get us into heaven 1 Corinthians 4:4 or deal with our sin problem. Once again Jesus Christ is the only ark that will bring salvation from the Judgment of God. It’s not good enough to as Jiminy Cricket put it “let our conscience be our guide”
